Mikel Marton is said to be one the newest faces of erotic photography. With a stimulating blend of male eroticism and the gloss of fashion photography he delivers a unique and dreamy style, testing that sensitive line that separates art and pornography. “I think the line doesn’t really exist, and we all draw it for ourselves,” he says. “I draw the line for myself, but the difference is I draw it to cross it. Apparently there is this unified consciousness that tells us exactly where the line is and isn’t. I aim to adjust that.”

Confronting people’s traditional boundaries regarding the male body (and all its parts) Mikel’s main goal is to physically express male sexuality without perversion, and to prove the male form as an artistic equal to the female form. Both challenging and sensitive, his vision succeeds to create a body of work that portrays men, entirely exposed in a way that still conveys beauty.

“Most people draw the line at the male genitalia. When the penis is soft and not the focus of the photograph then it can be considered artistic. But as soon as it is exhibited as erect, people over react, demonising male sexuality in general, and considering it all to be porn,” he states.

“Here we are in the 21st century and arousal is still regarded as being possessed with all sorts of unspoken evils. I think that a vital organ that commands this much emotional and physical reaction proves itself to be a worthy and very powerful artistic focus.”

23-year-old, Canadian-born Mikel regards the sexual and artistic oppression he experienced while growing up as a gay artist in a very Christian town as inspiration to express himself in a controversial way. Fresh from high school he moved to Vancouver and started to develop his talent and his name internationally, as a photographer.

Victimised by a burglary at the beginning of this year, Mikel faced a dramatic set back, which included the loss of all of his known work to that date. Through perseverance, and the support of his fans, Mikel was able to recover some equipment so he could continue to share his gift. Now residing in Montreal, Mikel is creating new works for publication, and has been negotiating several exhibitions in NYC. And, even though bent can’t display the extent of his daring portfolio, you can check it out online at toxicboy.net
