Ethan James Photography
Photography by Ethan James
Being a model, entertainer, artist or other is wonderful but to me you are a person first, and I will photograph you in that manner.
I grew up in Southeast Texas with aspirations to become a great writer, but as an undergraduate English major at Texas A&M University, I took two photojournalism courses. Working in the darkroom was a great experience, something I think everyone who wants to get into photography should do before jumping into the “modern” world of digital photography. I took a break from photography after graduating but when I decided to go back to school for my master’s degree in creative writing I found myself working with students in art and architecture. Their drive for creativity kept my mind turning, especially from visiting many of the student gallery shows. I purchased my first digital camera sometime in 2003 and that’s when I really started to work with people.
It’s been 4 years now. I’m finishing up my PhD, I have two published academic essays, and I love photography more than ever, mostly because of all the people I get to collaborate with on projects. Being a model, entertainer, artist or other is wonderful but to me you are a person first, and I will photograph you in that manner. There is no specific type, age, height, race, etc. that draws my eye more than another. I believe in photo honesty, not photo beauty so the idea of what “photogenic” has come to mean unsettles me. My photography is about the individual because our differences are what make the images so powerful.
