Gay In The Shire - Stef Jamal's Quirky Coincidence

Written by Mitchell Jordan

Stef Jamal is a hot young talent to watch out for.

The 19-year-old musician has been playing piano since he was ten and has since mastered both guitar and singing. In what he describes as a “quirky coinidence” Jamal began writing songs at the same time he realised he was gay. “It was a way of expressing myself,” he says. He’s also out and proud and lives in Sutherland Shire, to boot. “It can be hard to be gay in the Shire,” he admits.

Musically, he’s drawn to all genres, from “piano god” Ben Folds to Fallout Boy, but admits to a particular fondness for Missy Higgns. “She rocks my world,” he says. “When I listen to her music it’s like reading a diary.”

Jamal is currently working on his first EP that he hopes to be released later this year. In the meantime he juggles music with a Communications/Law degree, but hopes that the former will be his career. “First and foremost, I want to be a musician,” he says.
