Summer Gay Day

Written by Mitch Jordan

While some of us are just adjusting to spring, others are already counting down to one of the hottest events of the year, Sydney's Summer Gay Day.

Held from midday till 10pm on Saturday 1 December around Kippax Lake in Moore Park, the festival is set to be filled with music of all genres, off-the-hook comedy, cabaret, festival games and lots of good old gay fun.

“Sydney in summer is one of the world’s most beautiful cities,” explains Tim Duggan, Summer Gay Day marketing director. “We wanted to give it a truly world-class event to celebrate what we love most about our amazing city – beautiful music in a stunning location.”

Three different spaces have been designed to give partygoers a taste of everything. The main area, ‘Summer Gay Day Stage’ will focus on sunny, summery party music. The second area, ‘Summer Lovin’, on the opposite side of Kippax Lake will house the Manhunt Stage and music that’s a bit deeper and darker. The third stage, ‘Summer Camp’ is, as the name suggests, a space for comedy, games and more entertainment.

Created specifically for the gay and lesbian community and their friends, Summer Gay Day also falls on World AIDS Day, and the team are currently hard at work to make sure that this date is recognised at the event. Most of all, Duggan believes it will be a great way to kick off the hottest season of the year.

“It will be everything we love about summer festivals,” he says. “Lots of grassy space to spread out and dance … thousands of sun-lovers enjoying the Sydney sunshine with their friends – and hopefully making some new ones.”
